Root Canal Therapy

The goal of root canal treatment is to retain your tooth in your dental arch. Why? To preserve the jaw bone that supports it, to provide a surface on which to chew food and to prevent the collapse of neighbouring teeth.

When the nerve or pulp of your tooth becomes inflamed or infected, it can cause pain, swelling, and throbbing. This can be a result of trauma to the tooth or bacteria from decay. Root canal or endodontic therapy simply removes the source of infection along with the blood and nerve supply in the tooth, after which an inert filling material is placed to seal the tooth. After the root canal treatment is completed, a crown is recommended to strengthen and protect your tooth from breaking.

Common symptoms of a root canal infection:

  • Sharp, acute or intense pain
  • Pain when biting
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Tooth feels higher when biting
  • Tenderness and swelling of soft tissue around the tooth
  • Bad taste in the mouth
